Do you need a fun new exercise for the New Year? The Weaver Library invites you to learn to belly dance in three free classes! Beginning on Wednesday, January 7th at 6PM, dancers of all abilities will work with Yelena and her Goddess Delight Belly Dance Troupe. Yelena, who seeks to express the joy and beauty of life through the expression of dance, encourages her students with a warm and relaxed teaching style. Women of all ages and sizes are welcome in Yelena’s classes which are a unique fusion of many belly dance styles. Yelena’s belief is that everyone can dance, and her attitude is truly uplifting. Begin the New Year with confidence. Learn to dance! These classes are free and open to ages 17 and older, but registration is limited. Abraham Lincoln and the Rhode Island Soldier

Join author and Civil War historian Robert Grandchamp as we honor the bicentennial of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln. This lecture will be a diverse, in-depth study into Lincoln's complicated relationship with the states and the soldiers who did his bidding. Yelena and Goddess Delight Belly Dance Performance

The Goddess Delight Belly Dance Troupe has been performing together for the past two years. It is the realization of the vision of Yelena, who wanted to express the joy and beauty of life through the expression of dance. The troupe has brought together five women from diverse backgrounds to bring that vision to life with a blend and fusion of many belly dance styles. July winds down with two great outdoor concerts at the Weaver Library ( 41 Grove Ave. , East Providence , RI 02914 )! Bring lawn chairs to these free musical events!

Join us on Wednesday, July 23 at 6:30PM for a one-of-a-kind family concert featuring two of New England ’s favorite family entertainers. Grammy award winning artist Bill Harley and the multi-talented artist musician Keith Munslow team up to combine their funny and original songs, stories, and shenanigans! This concert is perfect for the whole family and will move inside to the East Providence City Hall Chambers in the event of rain.

Who can resist the sounds of a big band on a beautiful summer night? The Northeast Navy Showband, one of the most popular big bands in New England , returns to the Weaver Library lawn on Wednesday, July 30 at 6:30PM. Under the direction of Chief Musician Todd Smeltzer, the 18-member band performs a variety of musical styles from straight-ahead swing to funky, contemporary big band.

Lliving History - Military artifacts display June 7

East Providence resident Russ Erwin, an avid collector of World War II military items, will display hundreds of artifacts (uniforms, equipment, vehicles, personal items of soldiers) on the Weaver Library Lawn, 41 Grove Avenue, East Providence, RI on Saturday, June 7, 2008 from 10AM to 3PM. This year’s exhibit includes collections from the Korean, Vietnam, and Desert Storm wars. Erwin and other collectors and reenactors will answer questions and share their experiences collecting military memorabilia, marching in parades, and, especially, talking to students and veterans. This program is free and open to all and will move to the program room in the event of rain.

Through the Eyes of the Artist at the Weaver Library

Join us in exploring Art History with all of our senses on Monday evenings, March 17, 24, 31, and April 7, 2008 at 7PM. With music and photographs, we will journey into the lives and times of famous and beloved artists such as Van Gogh, Renoir, and Rodin. We will uncover fascinating information by looking at letters and journals written by the artists themselves. Through their masterpieces, we will learn about the life that surrounded them. At the end of each class, you will be provided with an overview of the artist including their featured work of art, and a note card memento. Join art history teacher Felicia Zavarella Stadelman for an enriching experience. Originally funded by a grant from the Cleveland Museum of Art, Through the Eyes of the Artist is a free program open to people of all ages.

A.C.E. Pajama Program

PJ’s, Jammies, Pajamas: We Want Them!

The East Providence Public Library System, 41 Grove Ave., East Providence, RI is proud to announce its participation in the “2008 Pajama Program” sponsored by the City of East Providence’s Association of City Employees (A.C.E.).

Rhode Island winters leave A.C.E. members chilled at the thought of children going to bed without a warm pair of pj’s. Beginning immediately, A.C.E. invites the community to donate new pajamas for Rhode Island children in need, especially pajamas for infants through pre-teen. These new pajamas will be collected throughout the year and distributed to different agencies around the state. Attractive donation boxes have been set up in numerous city buildings, including all the libraries, City Hall, the Senior Center, the Recreation Center, the Public Works Complex, and the Water Pollution Control Division.

Join the Association of City Employees in warming up the winter nights for many Rhode Island children. Donate a new pair of pajamas and experience the joy in helping one person or, as they say, “Pay it forward” today.

At the Riverside Branch Library, at 6;30 pm there is a program on Nursing Home Evaluation and Selection. If you are thinking about long term care for yourself or a family member this presentation is the perfect opportunity to learn about the nursing home selection process including what to look for on a tour and what questions to ask. You will also learn about the advantages and disadvantages of different types of living environments and home care as well as the larger issues that seniors and their families face when moving. The presenter, Kathy Heren, is the Clinical Director for the Alliance for Better Long Term Care. This program is free and open to all.

An Evening with Duke Ellington - Thursday, December 6, 6:30pm to 8:00pm at the Riverside Branch Library. This program will explore the career of Ellington and his fellow musicians from his days at the Cotton Club in the 1920s and his stunning achievements from 1938-1941, to his triumphant "comeback" at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival and his final creative surge in the 1960s. We will listen to numerous examples from each of these periods. The presenter, Ron Dufour, is Professor and former chair of the History Department at Rhode Island College. He has published numerous biographical essays on jazz musicians.

This presentation will teach you the basics of digital cameras and digital photography. Attendees will learn how to take a crisp, clear photograph every time and how to enlarge a photograph on the computer. You will learn what JPG, GIF, and TIF files are and why image file formats are so important. Come learn some basic tips and tricks to shooting memorable, good quality photographs with your digital camera.

The presenter, Paul Fontaine, is the Store Manager at Hunts Photo & Video in Providence. He is self-taught and enjoys photography as an intense hobby.

Book Club in a Bag

The Weaver Library is offering an exciting new service to support community-based book clubs called “Book Club in a Bag.” The library will provide ten copies of a single title, information about the author, book reviews, and possible discussion questions selected by a librarian to enhance your book group’s discussion.

All the contents are secured in a sturdy canvas bag for your “totable” convenience. “Book Club in a Bag” eliminates the expense of buying books for your book discussion group or borrowing individual copies from the library. The bag must be reserved in advance and may be checked out for six weeks to a single book group member.

AFFORDABLE HEALTH INSURANCE FOR SMALL BUSINESS

The Riverside Branch Library will present Affordable Health Insurance for Small Business, an information session about RI’s new HEALTHpact plans, on Thursday, October 11, 2007 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

Small businesses in RI are struggling with rising health insurance premiums and HEALTHpact plans are an option with lower premiums and lower deductibles while creating incentives for healthy choices. Employers attending the presentation will get a detailed overview of the new HEALTHpact plans, covering all the rewards and responsibilities that employers and employees will face.

The presenter, Matt Stark, has worked with the Health Insurance Commissioner since January 2006 as communications director and legislative liaison. Prior to working with the OHIC, he developed the healthcare legislative agenda for the Smaller Business Association of New England's RI chapter, while running a design and communications company.

The Fuller Library on Dover Avenue is once again hosting a pet photo contest. This year it's a Halloween theme, so you might want to try posing your pet by a pumpkin, witch, etc. If you really want a challenge -- put your pet in costume! As usual, we will take any pictures of your cute pets, in costume or not, since there will be other catagories as well. So bring us your photos! Voting will take place near the end of October! Thanks!

Disaster Preparedness discussion - Riverside Branch

Learn from a business owner whose business has survived a disaster! The presenter will share tips on how a small business owner can prepare for, survive and even recover from a disaster. She will discuss insurance, finances, and maintaining your mental stability under the stress of a disaster. The presenter, Pat Ryan, is the owner of Ryco Trimming Company & Creative Sewing Center located near the Blackstone River in Lincoln, RI. She started her business in 1984 and on October 15, 2005 a flood brought 30 inches of water inside the building. What took 23 years to build was destroyed in 8 hours. In the past two years Pat has successfully rebuilt her business and has learned a lot along the way that she will share with you. This program is free and open to all.

Northeast Navy Showband in Concert at the Weaver Library!

Join us on the lawn for a wonderful family folk and pop concert with guest star Mike Asquino and friends! A native of East Providence, Mike has established a national reputation as a musician and composer.

Mike's songs have been recorded by such greats as Leonard Cohen, Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, and others. Mike has played with a Who's Who of bands and musicians such as the Beach Boys, Jackson Brown, Jimmy Buffet, Eric Clapton, John Denver, Neil Diamond, Wayland Jennings, John Lennon, Willie Nelson, and others. Summer Reading Program kicks off

Thursday June 21 is the official kickoff to both the Children's and Teen Summer Reading Programs.

For younger children:

If you are entering preschool through Grade 6, sign up for the Summer Reading Program. The program will run from June 21 to August 23, 2007. Stop by any East Providence library location and pick up your reading chart. Keep track of the hours you read. Earn prizes and FREE passes to local museums and other fun places for all the reading you do at home and at the library this summer. Four lucky East Providence residents who complete 8 hours of reading will each win four tickets to a PawSox game and be entered to win a trip for four to Walt Disney World in Florida.

For teens:
If you are entering grades 6-12 sign up for the Teen Summer Reading Program between June 21-August 9. Stop by any East Providence library location and pick up your reading chart. Keep track of the hours you read. Get small prizes when you reach one and five hours. Get a raffle ticket for every ten hours you read. Use your tickets to enter the raffles of your choice to win movie tickets, Borders, Newbury Comics, itunes, Target and Wal-Mart gift cards valued at $20, t-shirts, and books. Prizes are made possible in part by the Friends of the East Providence Public Library. The Teen SRP is sponsored by Office of Library and Information Services and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Join us for a business program on this increasingly important topic. A three member panel will lead the discussion on energy conservation, recycling and making your business “earth friendly.” Learn techniques for improving energy efficiency in your home and business, simple steps you can take to be a greener business and why being green will save you money.

Panel members include: Vin Graziano, the Chief Executive Officer of RISE Engineering; Alyson Silva, Engineer and Commercial Recycling Coordinator of the RI DEM; and Gerra Harrigan, the Director of Business Development of New Harvest Coffee Roasters.

This program is free and open to all and geared to small or home-based business owners and those just thinking about starting their own business. No registration is required.

How to I get a library card?

You may get a card by showing proof of Rhode Island residency. This can be a driver’s license, car registration, checkbook, mail etc. as long as the current address is shown.

You may also get a card if you show that you are employed or enrolled in a school in RI. Children under 14 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian sign their application.

Crescent Park Carousel open

Next Monday night (May 7, 2007) at 7pm, Weaver Library hosts "The History of Buttons".

Textile historian and University of Rhode Island scholar Dr. Margaret Ordoñez will examine the history of buttons, displaying many fascinating examples from the URI Historic Textile and Costume Collection.
